For the third time, a proposal to open a casino in Fountainbridge, on the site of a former bingo and dance hall, has been rejected by city officials. Grosvenor Casinos claimed that Edinburgh has fewer gambling locations than any other city in Scotland, in an attempt to obtain a license for a casino.
However, residents believe that a gambling venue would cause more antisocial behavior in the area. So does the city’s licensing board that declined to support the project stating that they consider that there are enough casinos in the region. The Fountainbridge casino would be the fifth one in the city.
“I’m still unconvinced there was a need for the new facility”, Phil Attridge, licensing board convener councilor said. “It has not been proved that there are insufficient facilities in Edinburgh, despite the claims that other cities in Scotland have a higher provision of casinos. This proposal does not offer anything new, just more of the same.”
The proposal was first submitted in March, when the licensing board rejected it for the first time.
