Mr. Packer, the richest man in Australia these days, and a friend turned up at Star City Casino’s high-rollers’ room with no previous notice. Despite this fact, they were allowed into the invitation-only Endeavour room. The staff were very excited about their visit; it promised to be a great night at the Star City.
The two men played baccarat, Mr. Packer’s father’s favourite game. Late Kerry Packer was known as a big gambler at the casino, so much so he owned his personal chips with “KP” marked on them. He was called a “whale” because of being one of the biggest gamblers in the world, a casino legend.
James Packer’s companion had been losing repeatedly on the cards game, so he asked for a line of credit in order to keep on gambling. Mr. Packer, a member of PBL executive board, which owns two Australian casinos, offered to guarantee the $20,000 required by his friend. To everyone’s surprise, the management decided to refuse the line of credit.
The billionaire and his friend left Star City in protest, although the manager explained the casino was not allowed to provide credit to any customer by law. There were no comments at Mr. Packer’s office after the incident.
